It is similar to uploading file. Download large file usually is faster than you upload it. Because ISP usually provide larger download bandwidth than upload bandwidth. Same as uploading file, you may download it with FTP or HTTP.

You may want your file to be protected from any unauthorized access. There are many level of security. You can choose it depending on your request. The security level from low to high it depending on what kind of service you paid to get. From password protect to SSL connection encryption, those are current available from various service provider. Usually, if the site provides HTTPS access for you to upload and download files, it is considered to be good practice in security.
